Is Block Blast Good for Your Brain?

Short answer: Block Blast is a light workout for a few specific mental skills, and a good way to decompress. It will not raise your IQ. Here is the realistic picture.

What it actually exercises

  • Spatial reasoning — you are constantly fitting shapes into gaps and rotating them in your head (even though the game doesn’t let you rotate them on screen).
  • Planning and working memory — playing well means holding all three upcoming pieces in mind and sequencing them.
  • Impulse control — the biggest scoring skill is not clearing a line the moment you can. That is a patience drill.

What it doesn’t do

There is no strong evidence that casual puzzle games transfer to general intelligence or memory outside the game. You get better at Block Blast; that is mostly it. That is fine — that is true of almost every game.

The stress angle

Classic mode has no timer, no lives and no punishment for thinking. For a lot of players that makes it a genuinely calming activity — something to do with your hands while your mind settles. If that is what you want from it, our ad-free browser version is built for exactly that.

Playing it deliberately

If you want the planning benefit, play slowly and force yourself to sequence all three pieces before placing any. Our tips guide turns that into a routine.
